Why Armonika Is Building Algeria's Sovereign Cloud
Published January 05, 2025
Abstract
Armonika is building Algeria's first sovereign cloud. Discover our mission, our vision, and why Algerian digital sovereignty is no longer optional.
Armonika was born from a simple observation: Algeria could no longer afford to delegate its digital sovereignty to foreign powers. In 2023, 100% of Algerian enterprise cloud data transited through European or American datacenters, subject to foreign legislation, currency fluctuations, and commercial decisions made thousands of kilometers from Algiers. We decided to change that.
This is not an ideological statement. It is an economic, strategic, and technological reality.
The Problem We Are Solving
Algeria's Digital Dependency: A Systemic Risk
Imagine that an American law — the Cloud Act — allows the US government to access your customer data stored on AWS or Azure, without notifying you. This is not a hypothetical: it is the legal reality of every foreign cloud.
Imagine the Algerian dinar depreciating 15% against the dollar in a year. Your AWS cloud bill automatically increases by 15%, with no decision on your part.
Imagine a Parisian datacenter suffering a major outage on a Monday morning, as happened with OVH in 2021. Your Algerian applications go down. Your Algerian customers can't place orders. Your support team in Oran can't process tickets.
These scenarios are not theoretical. They have happened, they are happening, and they will happen again — as long as Algeria lacks a sovereign, resilient cloud infrastructure.
What Algeria Deserves
Algeria is Africa's tenth-largest economy. It has one of the continent's most dynamic tech-savvy youth populations. It has invested massively in connectivity (fiber, 4G, 5G). It deserves a cloud infrastructure equal to its ambitions.
Armonika is our answer to that ambition.
Our Vision: A World-Class Algerian Cloud
When we say "sovereign cloud," we are not talking about a second-tier infrastructure that consoles itself with being "local." We are talking about a cloud platform that competes technically with the best global players, while offering structural advantages that no hyperscaler can deliver in Algeria:
- Data in Algeria — never in Paris, never in Dublin, never in Ashburn
- Billing in DZD — your cloud budget does not depend on the dollar
- Support in French and Arabic — by engineers who understand your context
- Native compliance — with Algerian law, not a compliance patch built on top of a foreign platform
- Unbeatable latency — for your Algerian users
What We Have Built: Armonika's Three Products
Armonika Cloud — Algeria's Public Cloud
Our public cloud platform offers virtual instances, object storage, managed databases, and GPU cloud for artificial intelligence. Start in 2 minutes, pay as you go in DZD.
Armonika Cloud is designed for Algerian startups, SMEs, e-commerce businesses, software publishers, and any organization that wants cloud power without the complexity of managing infrastructure.
Armonika HYP — Algeria's HCI Hypervisor
For organizations needing dedicated infrastructure, Armonika HYP is our hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) hypervisor, developed in Algeria. It replaces VMware vSphere with a sovereign solution that is simpler to operate and free from prohibitive licensing costs.
Armonika HYP is chosen by Algerian banks, hospitals, and public administrations that need full physical isolation of their data.
Armonika VDI — Algeria's Virtual Desktop
Armonika VDI allows your teams to access their work environment from any device, anywhere in Algeria. It replaces fixed-location PCs with secure, centrally managed virtual desktops.
Timpani: Our Security Differentiator
Timpani is our intrusion detection system (IDS) developed entirely in Algeria. It continuously monitors all Armonika infrastructure and your workloads, without ever sending telemetry data outside the country.
Timpani analyzes billions of events per day to detect abnormal behavior, block DDoS attacks, and alert you in real time on your dashboard.
It is our commitment to security that makes no compromise on sovereignty.
Our Team: Algerian Engineers, for Algeria
Armonika is an Algerian company, created by Algerian engineers trained at the country's best universities and abroad. Our teams are based in Algiers and Oran.
We are not a franchise of a foreign cloud. We do not resell AWS services under an Algerian name. Every line of code in our stack is written by our teams.
That is what "made in Algeria" means in cloud.
Our Commitment to Algeria's Digital Ecosystem
Beyond our products, Armonika is committed to Algeria's digital ecosystem:
Training and Employment We recruit and train Algerian cloud engineers. Every new Armonika customer creates technology jobs in Algeria.
Local Partnerships We collaborate with Algerian integrators and IT services firms to deploy our solutions. We are not competing with the local ecosystem — we are strengthening it.
Research and Development We invest in R&D in Algeria, particularly in artificial intelligence and edge computing, so that Algeria is an actor in the next technological revolution.
Tomorrow's Digital Algeria Starts Today
Digital sovereignty is not an abstract concept. It is Algeria's ability to control its data, its infrastructure, and its digital future. It is the ability for an Algerian startup to launch without needing an American Visa card. It is the ability for an Algerian bank to guarantee its customers that their data never leaves the country.
Armonika exists to make all of this possible.
